California Demon / Frisco Pigeon Mambo

two new book reviews this week.. already working on my third… perhaps i should be investing some of this reading time into scanning business reply cards…. nah…. maybe later…. California Demon – Julie Kenner California Demon is the second book in the Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series. it picked up about 4 months after the last book and dragged me into the depths of “Momhood” all over again. i wont go into much detail as the read is well worth the hours you would put into it. after surviving the last book, Kate is caught up in another treacherous demon scheme where she has to save humanity from high level demons. this time she has extra worries though.. Chapter one begins the problems with her deceased husband. secret notes from him, bank accounts.. and HIS SOUL POSSIBLY INHABITING THE BODY OF HER DAUGHTERS SCIENCE TEACHER! man… its like a soap opera for me,, i cant get enough.. in order to savor the series a little more, i am taking a break to read a couple other books before hitting the ...

Crosses - A cut up book about a cut up girl

Image
In a bookstore with Jenn, we had about an hour to kill waiting to see a movie together. What to do, what to do. Well, let's go over to the mall bookstore and browse the shelves. We are both avid readers so it is always nice to talk books with her. I described a book to her (I was at a loss for the name of the book or the author at the time, even though it was one that was in my collection). She stated that she had never read it the cover creeped her out as a kid. The next day she came forward with a full cover image of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, and I was surprised we were able to communicate images into books. Cover art is important people!  So we are in the bookstore, wandering about both together and on separate missions. It gets into my head that I have not read the books Go Ask Alice / Jay’s Journal since I was in jr high school. I mosey over to the computer to look up which section they would be located in. I find them under “Anonymous” in the young adult ...

The Uses of Enchantment, Heidi Julavits

Image
Not to be confused with  Bruno Bettelheim’s The Uses of Enchantment,  which is stringently assertive in it’s psychoanalytical study of tales, fairy tales, and other folklore. There are some interesting comparisons to the two books. Heidi Julavits has created a book in three parts. all three parts are twisted and mixed together in alternating chapters. It is the story of Mary Veal (aka: Miriam) who is famous for being a girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, molested, and released two months later. Cast in and around Boston, the book carries literal and symbolic references to Witch Trials and the hysteria that surrounded them. The initial segment and many following segments are titled “What might have happened”. The second is notes from Dr. Hammer, her psychiatrist who interviews her and attempts to help her after she returns. The third is 14 years later, when Mary returns home for the funeral of her mother and tries to put all the pieces back together and find a sign tha...

Carpe Demon - Adventures of a Demon Hunting Soccer Mom, Julie Kenner

Image
Julie Kenner – Carpe Demon WOW. What a phenomenal book. Reading it was like looking through a portal in the Joss Whedon world to a time where Buffy is 35 or so, and has two kids, a minivan, and Lawyer husband. After finishing a book and being unprepared with a new one, i walked into  Murder by the Book , a local bookstore, and decided to peruse their selections. i was attracted by the title and the back cover description, but was unsure if i would like the writing style as that is often times hit or miss and rarely in between. one page into the book i walked over to the counter and bought it. ONE PAGE and i was already addicted. Kate is just your ordinary housewife, juggling kids, church responsibilities, and housework, but juggling them like a center ring circus act pro. She has been in retirement for 14 years and living in a quiet California town. Widowed and remarried, she has a 14 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. Raised by the Vatican after being pulled from an orphanage...
