Marin Montgomery’s What We Forgot To Bury

Image
Marin Montgomery’s What We Forgot To Bury- Worth the time, if you have space in your TBR pile Best thriller I have ever read? That is an unfair litmus test. Deserving of an audience in it’s own right? Absolutely. FYI this review is very surface level.. The secrets in the novel are well crafted but very brittle and once known cannot be unlearned, so I will avoid all size spoilers. Presented in a classic multiple narrative structure, chapters alternate between 17 year old high schooler Elizabeth (Elle) and 30 something Charlotte. Charlotte is eccentric and fearful pregnant woman. She exhibits signs of extreme paranoia, some seeming elements of compulsiveness, and gut wrenching fear tied to decades prior abuses. While Charlotte is frequently left alone by her husband’s common business trips, her upscale suburban neighborhood, and the passwords to her husband’s email account help her with a facade of safety. During an epic windstorm, a panic inducing knock on the door by a stranger c...

Last Mermaid Princess: gets an award for 'awesome disclaimer'

Anaphora Literary Press release The Last Mermaid Princess.. Lily Lewis’s The Last Mermaid Princess was a rough read. I would be hard pressed if I would suggest this book to others. It was raw, it was sad.. It was also amazingly well written. The text and descriptions were phenomenal. On the opposing face, I cannot say I enjoyed it, though I do not regret reading it. I dont applaud car crashes when I drive past them, this was like driving past a pileup. A semi-autobiographical (90% fact 10% fiction) story following Lily’s life with some names and details changed or embellished, it chronicles and describes her life long slow implosion. Lily grows up in a small texas town, the only Thai child, different and unwelcome. She is bullied, abused, sexually assaulted. Her mother is unhinged, acting as a shepherd for a lot of the abuse, basking in some power play. The book continues to follow Lily as she gets older, enters college. She becomes a mother, and tries to break the cycle tha...

Ghosts of Gaudi: more than I expected

Image
The Ghost of Gaudi is a couple years old Lion Forge release. I wasnt sure what I was getting into here at first. I am not a massive Art Nouveau enthusiast and I have never been to Barcelona … no surprise my experience with architect/designer Antoni Gaudi was close to nil. Ghost of Gaudi (written by El Torres, designed and crafted by Jesus Alonso Iglesias) was eye opening. Instead of crafting the graphic novel as an educational tome, it is approached with as a murder mystery. Check the last two images here to see a comparison of art to photography of actual locations like the Catalan Basilica Sagrada Familia Student and grocery worker Toni saves a man from being hit by a car, hospitalizing herself. Those around her tell her of the similarity of her story to that of Gaudi himself and his death in that spot in 1926. Meanwhile, murders are occuring around Barcelona at Gaudi landmarks, those dead are also tied to his legacy as an artist. Inspector Skinner visits the sites look...
