Sweetheart: A nice way of saying 'I f*cked up your head forever'



Heartsick introduced us all to Archie, the Vicoden popping torture victim/Portland detective. We met Susan, bizarre hair colored closet cigarette smoking Oregon journalist with a penchant for married men. Last but not least, Gretchen Lowell, Pacific Northwest serial killer with 200 murders under her belt.
With Gretchen in jail and Archie (her final victim) clutching loosely at his own pill induced death, everything seems like it is going to cool down in Portland. Archie is drawn into another series of murders, unfortunately, the clues are slim. Susan is tracking down information about a local senator and his sexual escapades with a 14-year-old babysitter, a story that is over a decade old.

There was a lot of humor, dark black humor in this book. humor might be a bit incorrect, as it leans more toward humour (as in the fluids), coming out of whatever hole the murderer has created in the corpse. Regardless, there was a more solid/lively feel to some of the characters, even in situations where there should have been none. You could tell that Chelsea was more in her element, that she was more comfortable with the personalities of her creations. She was able to create the connections between characters and situations with out being overbearing.

Perfect for serial killer fans and thriller junkies.

Book two of Chelsea Cain’s series was phenomenal. I was caught off guard. I was rooting for the bad guy, yet hoping she would die painfully. I could not get enough of it. I was sad when the end arrived. I was left wanting the third book to be finished and in my hands.

I know this is not much of a review, but hey, lazy plus in a hurry equals me spoutin’ off with the clickety click of the keyboard.

Oh yeah. Hey Chelsea.. for the movie? I would suggest Sarah Chalke from Scrubs and other shows. She could pull off a Gretchen in your Heartsick movie adaptation.

    Hey!

    I'm a huge Chelsea Cain fan and of course LOVE, beyond LOVE her Heartsick book series, just finished the 4th one last night - which of course the title slips my mind right at this moment! Another great, juicy read....a lot less Gretchen Lowell and general gore for that matter, but the writing remains enticing and amazing and of course, always love the characters, Susan for me especially. Anywho, the whole point of this message, was to say I AGREE on your actress choice for Gretchen (should a movie be made, which it totally should!) Sarah is a natural beauty, and perfectly matched to Gretchens description, they need to keep her natural though, that's where her beauty shines.

    i think sarah chalke would be a much better choice than who they were using for all of the book 3 advertisements online.
    NOT THAT I HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST STORM LARGE, she is after all fantastic :)

    book 4 is on my to be read pile. i have been a George RR Martin junkie for a few months.. i am going to miss gretchen in book 4 though.

Blood and Tacos issue 1 is pretty awesome folks. You can read it for free at  bloodandtacos.com Alternately, if you want a copy you can save and keep forever and ever, it is for sale on Amazon for a whole dollar. $0.99 cents of glory. In a nutshell, it has a series of short stories that are written to appear as if they were long lost relics of the manly man era of pulp fiction. Happy Policeman (Patricia Anthony)

Back in the summer of 2010, I decided to see about curbing my book spending, and instead work on reading books already on my shelves. This was an obvious failure, when I was on the Powells Books website and found a bargain Sci-fi bin of books for about a dollar. I bought seventeen books and have been slowly working my way through them. Patricia Anthony’s ‘The Happy Policeman’ was in that pile of books. I am not sure how this ended up in the dollar bin. Turns out, this book was incredible, worth far more than the dollar I paid for it. I bought it sight unseen, had no idea what the novel was about, but the cover art painted by Mark Smollin caught my attention, the title was unusual and the book became mine.
