The Gargoyle, Andrew Davidson
Davidson’s book, The Gargoyle, is very easily one of the best books (fiction) that i have ever read.
Jenn bought a copy and read it front to back in a couple of days. she had tears in her eyes at points and fierce anger at others. i patiently waited my turn to read.
it has been about a month now since i finished the last page. i started off with the first 50 pages and found that i was not getting into the book. i could only think “what torture this is. the story is interesting, but too pessimistic for my liking.” i nearly put the book down. then right around the ordained cut off point (around page 50), Marianne Engel enters the story. i am glad i soldiered through the beginning.
Marianne Engel is a sculptor of stone gargoyles. the main character is a burn victim who used to own his own porn production company. this story is about them. it is about their interactions. it is about their worlds and how they coalesce and merge.
now, my previous statements were not stating that the book started off badly. only that it was not my preference for plot, and it was slower than i generally wade through. in reality it was very well written, it makes sense and is 100% needed. with out the first 50 pages, this book would be lessened. it is important to set the protagonist (or is he the antagonist) in motion.
I have a fear of spoilers. I ran across this book on a series of different book blogs. Each of them gave high reviews, and i chose not to read them. Instead, i wanted to pick it up and delve right into it. i chose not to read the back of the book/inside cover to get a synopsis. as such, i refuse to give a spoiler here.
If you want to know what this book is about, go read about it elsewhere. nothing i describe about this tale will do it justice. i can only suggest that all people who trust my judgment should read it.
i feel like i have been rambling. but honestly, this is why i held off a month to write the book up. i cannot accurately describe how this book affected me.
let me know if you do read it, i would love to get your take.
