Pigtopia (Kitty Fitzgerald)

I can keep this very simple.
I read this last week but was not a priority to get reviewed..
Have your read or watched a movie detailing the plot of the Frankenstein monster? Well, then you already know the plotline of this book.
- Replace the little girl with a different little girl.
- Replace a resurrected man and stolen brain with a large headed guy who has some mental disabilities, lots of family issues, a collection of pigs in a tunnel under his house and talks like Elmo from Sesame Street.
Really.. I had the same “that could have merit” reaction that you are having right now. I can promise you that you are better of reading something else.
Nothing against the author or the work, it’s just been done before, and this didn’t really bring anything new to book world.
I feel like I got dumber while reading this. It’s not like reading Faulkner’s ‘Sound and the Fury’. There is no Benjy inside the main character, waiting to pop out in some raging stream of concio-awesomness.
It is not like reading the Haddon’s ‘Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime’, with it’s clever approach and interesting character development.
This book may be right up peoples alley, so if you wanna give it a shot, do it. However, I can firmly state that I found it very very very similar to drowning in wet cement while muppets danced around me mocking my pain.
~~~
You want to read a good swine relevant story? Try a coming of age story that was required reading when I was in high school (likely still is). Paul Zindel’s ‘The Pigman’.
Push those memories, I know you can do it.. Yeah, that to the left of the drug haze, was your reading list, including the Pigman. Remember it? Yeah, it was very good.
That’s all I have for you.
  1. Just came across this so-called review of Kitty Fitzgerald's 'Pigtopia'. I don't know who the reviewer is but I doubt very much that s/he read more than the blurb on the back cover of the book. For a start, Fitzgerald's adventure with language isn't even mentioned and with it she has created a classic character nothing like Frankenstein's monster. This book is studied in many European universities in depts of both Literature and Translation.
    Please don't rely on this cynical and arrogant reviewer's point of view, just Google the title and see what others have said.
  2. Jamie -
    i actually did read the book in it's entirety and was not pleased with the result. I thought it was annoying drivel. Doesn't mean others cannot enjoy it, if you liked it, kudos, i am glad for you.
    I appreciate that you stopped in and dropped your perspective. all perspective is good perspective in my view..
    BUT .. I have to ask 3 questions:
    1) do you have a problem with people who have opposing opinions? my "so-called review" irked you so bad you needed to cry a little into the ether? Why does an opinion on a half decade old book make you so volatile?
    2) what part of this horrific "language experiment" was not thoroughly covered? by stating "talks like Elmo from Sesame Street" (which is true) i believe i touched on the subject. Even referenced other works that i felt did it better.. if you haven't read Sound/Fury or Curious, then you have no leg to stand on in this discussion.
    3) you ask people to ignore my perspective and just google it. have you even bothered to do this yourself? just drop by Goodreads.com and notice that there are 296 ratings.
    on a scale of 1-5, 20 rate it a 1, and 33 rate it as 2. The majority of readers have enjoyed this book, but there are a number of us that did not. Some people hate moby dick, doesn't mean it is not something that others will enjoy.
  3. I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with me but I do dislike people who put themselves forward as arbitrators of good taste and then use corny, emotive language to reinforce their opinions as if they were factual.
  4. jamie - thank you(?) for stopping in again.
    .
    taste is subjective, yours has no weight greater than mine. it is all trends, fads, and opinion. When discussing "Taste" opinions are fact, none of which are concrete until the individual has experienced the media and formed their own opinion...
    .
    The fact that you are here wasting electrons is evidence that you and i are alike. have you looked in the mirror and noticed that you also pose as an "arbiter of good taste" (not arbitrator)? do you realize that you are as much the opinionated wind-bag as i am?
    .
    i stand behind my opinions that "This book may be right up peoples alley, so if you wanna give it a shot, do it. However, I can firmly state that I found it very very very similar to drowning in wet cement while muppets danced around me mocking my pain". Pigtopia was a mind numbing novel whose author tried to bridge the gap between children/adult parables. it was heavy handed and overly x-tian at the end and annoyed me greatly. The language methodology applied to the characters did nothing regarding increasing tolerance towards him, instead made me want scream and throw rocks at babies.
    .
    If you are going to troll about, go find someplace else. i suggest trolling a dictionary website. spends some time reviewing the definitions of "fact" and "opinion" and then re-asses this whole discussion you started.
