Jim Lives: cool art, not much else

Image
Jim Lives - The mystery of the Lead singer of The Doors and the 27 club Arc copy. I had high hopes for this but ultimately was disappointed. I just didn’t like it. I suggest you skip this comic. The core idea was cool, from there it was all down hill. This graphic novel was fast paced but had little depth.. A 50+ year old father searching for his journalist son is embroiled in a plot to hide members of the 27 club, a series of artists and musicians who ‘died’ at the peak of their careers at the age of 27. The journalist son is missing after he finds an old man who may be Jim Morrison, hiding out in a mediterreanean town known and studied for longevity of life. The art was cool, but it was difficult to view. The rough edges and sharp lines made all of the characters, even the protagonists, appear to be sinister and angry even when they are ‘happy’. Both story and art together give forth a sub 75 page graphic novel that not only barely skims the surface, it wraps the entire plot into a p...

You Died: An Anthology of the Afterlife

Arc copy, though the comic was published in September 2020. While not an advertisement, I would feel remiss if I failed to state that you can pick up a soft cover copy or pdf on the Iron Circus site for $20ish bucks, pretty good deal after having seen the ARC. Iron Circus Comics ‘You Died: An Anthology of the Afterlife” You Died was initially a kickstarter, dedicated to comics that are centric to death. Many comics in this anthology are (or feel) biographical, others are scifi, scientific, playful. The artistic styles are vast across the 24 separate artist renderings showing detailed technical to soft sketching, beautiful art and wonderful stories. Admitedly, 3-4 of the 24 comics didnt catch my interest, but as with any collection, tastes will differ! What you will not find in this 270ish page anthology is gore, excessive violence, serial deaths or anything else that pushes the work beyond PG13. Because of this strict inclusion criteria, the comic work is reasonably appropriate for mos...

Lifetime Passes: I want a churro sword

Image
Picked up a grip of preview Graphic Novels, many set for sale later this year. First on the pile was just freaking awesome, slated for publication October 2021. Lifetime Passes, created by Claudia Aguirre and Terry Blas is going to be a really strong fall release. I was impressed with the advance readers copy which was in black and white and (for piracy protection reasons) a lower grainier resolution, I am sure the full color release will POP and astound readers. ‘Lifetime Passes’ caught my attention with the publisher description and cover art. The graphic novel starts off slow but doesnt stay there. The main cast is a band of friends that appear to be a mixed bag that do not belong together. Their only tie seems to be their various obsessions with an alt reality disneyland built on the story of a princess who saves herself. For their unique reasons, the 4 friends scheme to gain permanent access to their favorite amusement park. There is a rumour that a death on the pr...
