Graphic Novel review, dangerous title

Image
Image comics release ‘Little girls’. Not sure how I feel on this one. Great read, but feels cut short. Also, hard to hashtag because of the title. Lielet and Sam are two young women in Ethiopia who make fast friends on Sams arrival in town. Being adventurous and wanting to prove themselves, they set out into the brush to investigate rumors of wild animal activity, which within days turns into reports of dismembered victims. Stories emerge that the killer is a beast of Kenyan legend called the Kerit, killer of livestock and eater of brains, now with the taste for human. A very original storyline, with what looks like roots in a 1999 Ethiopian territory war between a massive pack of hyenas and a huge pride of lions. It left me personally in an unresolved state feeling abruptly ended. I will leave it there so as not to risk spoilers. Worth reading? Absolutely. I just wish it had a bit more meat in the sandwich.

Minimata- What a tragic story

Image
Sad topic. Wonderful graphic novel. Minamata Story:An Eco Tragedy - Amazing Stone Bridge Press release from june of this year. Author Sean Michael Wilson and artist Akiko Shimojima put together an insightful and informative graphic novel telling the story of Minamata Japan. Minamata unfortunately is known for the ecological disaster caused by the Chisso Corporation dumping methylmercury into river and bay water, giving the entire coastal community(s) mercury poisoning and creating multi generational congenital illness. It’s fucking horrible. The comic takes a unique approach of having college student Tomi researching the region for a school project. Tomi learns that his grandmother lived in Minamata, mother was born there, and they abandoned it when social stigma for the region started creating complications. Tomi visits, learns about the neurological disease, and learns about himself in the process. The story focuses directly on the coastal town of Minamata and its people, ...
