Patience and Esther: An Edwardian Romance


 


You know what was a great surprise this week? The November 2020 Iron Circus comics release Patience and Esther: An Edwardian Romance. SW Searle released a refreshing graphic novel love story spanning decades that contains women empowerment themes, erotica, suffrage , and an amazing eye for detail hidden away in the art.

19 year old Patience, who sells her hair for cash and has never been away from home in Scotland, starts working as a Housemaid at the Honeycutt estate. She has no understanding of the norms and behavior expected, and is desperate to do well and send money home to her family.

Patience meets 21 year old Esther, Head Housemaid, who helps her navigate the new world. As their work continues, both women find that there is more than just friendship kindled. With the strike of a match, love is born.

While their relationship is kept secret, Both women are dealing with their own narratives. Patience battles with body image issues, sure that she is going to be passed over when convenient. Meanwhile, Esther searches for her place in a world where she carries her fathers English name while forced to neglect her

Blood and Tacos - Penetrator ManKill and others kick ass content

Blood and Tacos issue 1 is pretty awesome folks. You can read it for free at  bloodandtacos.com Alternately, if you want a copy you can save and keep forever and ever, it is for sale on Amazon for a whole dollar. $0.99 cents of glory. In a nutshell, it has a series of short stories that are written to appear as if they were long lost relics of the manly man era of pulp fiction. You know the time frame… we are talking chest hair, mullets, cheesy one liners, blood, fist fighting. All the things that make a Charles Bronson film awesome and the Joe Don Baker movie “Mitchell” so damn terrible (awesome). Current issue includes work by Gary Phillips, Matthew C. Happy Policeman (Patricia Anthony)

Back in the summer of 2010, I decided to see about curbing my book spending, and instead work on reading books already on my shelves. This was an obvious failure, when I was on the Powells Books website and found a bargain Sci-fi bin of books for about a dollar. I bought seventeen books and have been slowly working my way through them. Patricia Anthony’s ‘The Happy Policeman’ was in that pile of books. I am not sure how this ended up in the dollar bin. Turns out, this book was incredible, worth far more than the dollar I paid for it. I bought it sight unseen, had no idea what the novel was about, but the cover art painted by Mark Smollin caught my attention, the title was unusual and the book became mine. THIS BOOK WAS NOT ACTUAL SCI-FI. Do not auto-ignore this book if you are a genre snob, you may be missing out.
