Robogenesis: Skip This Sequel

Image
Well, it took me nearly six months, but I did it.. I finished reading Daniel Wilson’s RoboGenesis, sequel to Robopocalypse ... I kept hoping there would be explanation... but I was left disappointed. From the very first page, why would Archos suddenly in it’s dying moment decide to save humans and indenture itself to them? The entire book is built off a premise that has no value. As a result, the amazing things that followed had no value just as the terrible didnt... all the way to the last page. Skip this sequel

Goodbye Things, The new Japanese Minimalism

Goodbye Things, The new Japanese Minimalism - Fumio Sasaki Small book, 250ish pages.. Fumio Sasaki was a collector of ‘things’. Nothing crazy, just the normal every day objects. Unlike Marie Kondo, Sasaki is just a normal dude who got overwhelmed. He started to feel as if the things he owned were part of his identity. This was seen in simple things such as where he would place a book, so that people who enter his home see the book, and add the recognition of it to their image of him.. That he is the kind of person who would read that book, even if he hadn’t.

Sasaki decided to say Goodby [to his] Things. This book is less of a guidebook, and more of a conversation about the relationship we have with items. it is less about sparking joy and more about utility. Can you use one thing more and remove the need for 3 other things. It does go into the emotional ties with objects, but not to the same depth as Kondo. You can almost feel the increase of fervor on the topic, and he ph...

Deck Z: Shit Goes Down. Insert zombie stuff here

Image
Deck Z: The Titanic: Unsinkable. Undead -  Besides having a long title that is confusing to punctuate, this was a fun read from Scholastic books. At a 50¢ pricepoint from the Jan's Beaverton "discounted to get them the fuck outta my store" table, it seemed like a fun impulse buy. In a nutshell, a German scientist attempting to cure various plagues escapes from his lab before his research on a particularly nasty bug can be coopted as a weapon. He boards the Titanic to make a fast journey to America and hopefully continue his research. Shit Goes Down. Insert zombie stuff here. DeckZ falls firmly into the Young Adult Alternate History category with a strong splash of Action and Horror. For a YA novel, it was very well written, avoiding a lot of dumbed down language as it wouldnt fit in a 1912 timeline. Surprisingly enjoyable, if you are looking for a fast but good read at a mid to high YA range, this wont challenge you, but will not disappoint.

Hope Never Dies: What the everliving fuck did I just read?

Image
What the everliving fuck did I just read? Novel was titled ‘Hope Never Dies’. Judging this book by the cover, we see what looks like the poster of a buddy cop film starring Barack Obama. In the background we see Joe Biden driving a vintage muscle car while Obama stands in the T-top pointing to the future... or is it a criminal they are chasing? I loved this book and cant help but wonder what the public figures included would say if they read it. Joe fumbles around in a purely loveable way, answering the door in his boxers and pondering the value of friends while searching for a way to kick a conspiracy in the face without screwing up his bum knee. In this PURELY FICTIONAL pulp detective novel, Uncle Joe Biden is pulled to the backyard by a suspicious noise. Instead of a burgler, he finds Obama smoking a cigarette and bearing bad news of a long time Biden acquaintances death. Biden, dons his best Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and RayBans, teaming up with his ex-commander in chief to sif...

Brother Sister Madness Sin, Now the Terror will begin!

Image
I started reading the book Pin, not having realized it was the basis for the 1988 horror movie of the same name. Rating along horror lite, this juvenile addition to the horror genre was enjoyable, but purposefully wooden. Andrew Neiderman‘s Pin follows early post highschool adulthood of brother sister combo Ursula and Leon. Leon is obsessed with a clear plastic skinned medical dummy named Pin that his physician father owned. After his parents deaths, Leon’s attachment to the dummy and detatchment from reality increase as he gives it voice, a seat at dinner, and actively communicates with it as if it were a father or mentor. This book follows Leon as his mental state continues to decline. The 276 page book is a little difficult to read, but not because the characters mimic the physicality of the title object, more due to the sexuality. Ursula and Leon being orphaned at early teen age were left to figure out the human ‘Need’ for sexual contact. While no incest occurs in t...

Draft script of the original Beetlejuice- more horror, less comedy

Image
While not a book, I would highly recommend reading this early draft revision of the beetlejuice. This story is darker and more violent. Beetlejuice himself is a shapeshifer who can roam the world, and dedicates the last third of the book to mentally breaking down the Deetz family before revealing himself. Trigger - Contains a severe bedroom scene with him and Lydia. In this draft, Charles Deetz is a writer, Lydia Deetz is a full blown Soho death metalhead, and a surprise little sister Cathy Deetz is the main protagonist. While mother Delia Deetz and other characters are mainly unchanged, the Maitlands appear to be of an older generation having opened their hardware store in 1963. Sandworms are only hinted at, and much of the humor is absent being that BeetleJuice claims Amityville was his work. Simple google search if you want to read for yourself.
